Because of the way that Microsoft changed their security as of Windows 7, it is best that you NOT install it under C:\Program Files (which is the default for Windows).

It is likely to not work properly if installed under C:\Program Files -- it might, but it won't work right for most people.

NOTE: By default, the installer program will install to C:\Arcom\RCP Programmer and you should allow it to install there

Simply uninstall it (make sure you have your Registration email handy) and reinstall using the default installation directory.

RCP minimizes to my task bar immediately on launch

This is caused by a bug in Windows© in which the 'Windows State' in RCP's .ini file is set to = 1.  That indicates that the Window was minimized when the program closed (in this case force closed).  The next time the program is opened, it will open in that state (minimized).

Under normal circumstance, you should be able to right click on the program in the toolbar, tell it to 'Restore', and it should restore back to the correct value in ini file's settings.

But that doesn't work in this instance because Windows© is setting the 'Window Top' and 'Window Left' parameters (how Windows determines where on the screen to display the program)  to negative numbers and those negative numbers prevent the window from restoring back to where it should be. This is the bug we're referring to.

The solution is to close the program, open the rcp.ini file with a text editor (any text editor or even Notepad or Wordpad), take the five lines in the [Update] section

Window Width=3120
Window Height=4125
Window Top=3765
Window Left=8175
Window State=0

and paste them over the corresponding lines in the [Main] section. Then save the ini.  The next time you open the program, it should open normally. You can then drag the RCP Window where you like on your desktop. Close the program and your new settings will be written to your .ini file. RCP will now open properly on your desktop.

My RCP Help file (Windows CHM file) doesn't display

My RCP Help file (Windows CHM file) doesn't display

Sometimes, Windows HTML Help Viewer doesn't display help files and you may receive a message "navigation to webpage cancelled". This usually happens after you install a new program or a Windows Update is done. Panic not, for it is easy to cure!
The first thing to try is to navigate to the .chm file in question, right click on it and select Properties. Look for a button near the bottom of the General tab marked "UNBLOCK". Click it and try to open the .chm file again. This may work but if it doesn't, there's something else to try.

Right click on your taskbar to open Task Manager. Click on File > Run new task. In the Create new task window that opens, click the "Create this task with Administrator priviledges" and run the following commands one at a time:

regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx
regsvr32 itss.dll
regsvr32 itircl.dll

You'll get a "success" dialog after each one. That's all there is to it! No reboot required and your chm should now display properly!
I use a USB to serial converter with my Windows 7 (or later) computer but RCP doesn't seem to like it

I use a USB to serial converter with my Windows 7 (or later) computer but RCP doesn't seem to like it

Don't use USB to Serial cables that are based on the Prolific chip. They're unreliable because they don't deal with the voltage difference between USB and Serial and it thus becomes a crap shoot if the USB's voltage tolerance when combined with the device's voltage tolerance (in this case the RC210) happen to match just enough to let the device work. There are also well publicized issues with counterfeit Prolific ICs that do not work realiably with Windows 7 and later.

We've had very good results with the cables that are based on the FTDI chipset and they work very reliably with our software (and other's too!)

Click here for a reasonably priced one that we use here at Arcom

I have several RC210s and some have different firmware installed. Can I run multiple versions of the RCP software on the same computer?

Indeed you can.

As each version of RCP has a uniquely named executable file (.exe), all you need do is install mutliple versions on your computer and create a Desktop shortcut to the appropriate file. For example, you can create a shortcut to Version 8.00 RCP by pointing it to C:\Arcom\RCP Programmer\rcp8_00.exe (the default installation directory and file name for RCP 8.00).

You can use this method for as many different versions of RCP you need by simply creating as many Desktop shortcuts as you need. Then simply launch the one for a particular controller.

When I select Courtesy Tone #5 in the RCP software and upload to the controller, it doesn't change

It's important to remember that RCP is designed to program the various parameters of the RC210 and not actually cause it to use those changes.

That is to say, while you can change the contents of a Courtesy Tone and upload those changes to the RC210, the RC210 is designed - by default - to use Courtesy Tone 1. If you want to use a different one, you must explicitly tell the RC210 to use a different Courtesy Tone (usually done via a Macro)

You don't need your registration information in order upgrade your copy of RCP. Simply download the appropriate update and follow the instructions included in the readme.txt file that is part of the download
